Why Unit Price Matters

Package prices are misleading when sizes vary. A 24-oz jar at $4.99 looks cheaper than a 5-lb bag at $12.99, but per-ounce the bag costs roughly half as much. Unit pricing strips away the packaging and shows the true cost of what you’re buying. Retailers are required to display unit prices on shelf tags in many jurisdictions, and buyers and category managers use unit cost analysis to evaluate vendor bids, set competitive prices, and flag margin-eroding SKUs.

Common Unit Conversions in Grocery

This tool converts across standard measurement systems: weight (ounces, pounds, grams, kilograms), volume (fluid ounces, milliliters, liters, gallons), and simple count. It uses NIST standard conversion factors. The tool auto-detects the unit group from your first entry and normalizes all items to a common base, which you can override with the “Compare per” selector.
