Margin vs. Markup — The Distinction That Matters
Margin and markup both describe the gap between cost and selling price, but they are measured against different denominators — and mixing them up is one of the most common (and expensive) mistakes in retail pricing. Margin is the gap as a percentage of the selling price: if you buy for $60 and sell for $100, margin is $40 / $100 = 40%. Markup is the same gap as a percentage of cost: $40 / $60 = 66.7%. A 50% markup is a 33.3% margin. A 100% markup (“keystone”) is a 50% margin. If a buyer tells you “we need 40% margin” and you apply 40% markup, you have just left roughly 11 percentage points of profit on the table.
Common Retail Math
Buyers, category managers, and pricing teams move fluently between the four quantities — cost, selling price, margin %, markup % — depending on the decision. Cost and target margin are the usual inputs when setting a list price. Cost and competitor price are the inputs when evaluating whether to match a promo. Selling price and margin dictate the landed-cost ceiling when negotiating with a supplier. This tool lets you enter any two of the four and calculates the other two instantly, with a reference table of common margin/markup equivalents you can use as a mental model.
Automating Pricing and Margin Reporting
When pricing decisions scale up — thousands of SKUs across dozens of zones, with promo prices, vendor funding, and category-level margin targets — a manual calculator is not enough. I build pricing and margin reporting solutions for grocery, retail, and distribution operations that pull cost and price data from ERP and merchandising systems, calculate blended and weighted margin at the category, department, and store level, and flag SKUs drifting outside target. See grocery and retail services, explore custom reporting, or get in touch to discuss automating your pricing and margin workflow.
