Why Slotting Matters

Pickers spend more than half their time walking. Optimized slotting — placing high-velocity SKUs closer to the staging area and at waist-height "golden zone" positions — directly reduces pick travel time and fatigue. Well-slotted warehouses can achieve 30-50% higher pick rates than poorly slotted ones with the same layout.

Hot / Warm / Cold Zones

The simulator divides slots into three velocity zones. Hot-zone SKUs (typically the top 20% by picks) get the best positions — closest to shipping, middle-level shelves. Warm-zone SKUs fill the next tier of positions. Cold-zone SKUs go to the back aisles and top/bottom shelves. This Pareto-driven placement often follows the ABC classification — feed data from the ABC Analysis Tool for consistency.

Beyond the Simulation

Real-world slotting has to account for SKU dimensions, weight, compatibility (can't slot chemicals next to food), seasonality, and family grouping (related SKUs picked together should be near each other). This tool provides the baseline velocity-driven plan — use it as a starting point for more detailed slotting analysis.
