What Are PLU Codes?
Price Look-Up (PLU) codes are 4- or 5-digit numbers assigned by the International Federation for Produce Standards (IFPS) to identify bulk produce items at the point of sale. A cashier keys in 4011 for bananas, 4065 for green bell peppers, 4131 for small Fuji apples. The system has been in use since 1990 and covers over 1,400 items across fruits, vegetables, herbs, nuts, and dried fruits. This tool includes the complete IFPS database with all currently assigned codes.
Conventional vs. Organic PLU Codes
Organic produce uses a 5-digit code formed by prefixing “9” to the conventional 4-digit code. Organic bananas are 94011 instead of 4011. This prefix system lets POS systems distinguish organic from conventional at checkout without requiring separate item records for every commodity. The prefix “8” was formerly reserved for genetically modified produce but was retired in 2015 and is no longer assigned.
