Dimensional Weight Calculator

Compare dimensional weight across UPS, FedEx, and USPS with billable weight analysis.

Dimensional Weight Calculator

Enter package dimensions and actual weight to see the dimensional weight for every major carrier side by side. The calculator highlights when dimensional weight exceeds actual weight — meaning you'll be billed more than the scale says. Supports imperial and metric units. Use the results to choose a smaller box, negotiate rates, or verify carrier invoices.

What Is Dimensional Weight?

Dimensional weight (also called volumetric weight or DIM weight) is a pricing technique that reflects the amount of space a package occupies relative to its actual weight. Carriers use the greater of actual weight or dimensional weight to determine shipping cost — so a large, lightweight box can cost more than a small, heavy one.

How the Divisor Works

The DIM divisor converts cubic inches into an equivalent weight in pounds. A lower divisor means the carrier penalizes bulky packages more aggressively. UPS and FedEx both use 139 for domestic and international shipments. USPS uses 166, and only applies dimensional weight pricing to parcels exceeding 1 cubic foot (1,728 cubic inches). These divisors change occasionally — when they do, shippers with large lightweight products feel it immediately.

Why This Matters

Dimensional weight catches many shippers by surprise on their first carrier invoice. If you're shipping products in oversized boxes with excess void fill, you're paying for air. Understanding the dim weight breakpoint for your products helps you right-size packaging, choose the right carrier, and accurately estimate shipping costs before they hit the invoice. Pair this with the Shipping Box Calculator to find optimal box sizes, or the Freight Rate Estimator to see the full cost picture.

Need dimensional weight checks automated in your shipping workflow? I build custom integrations that optimize carrier selection, validate package dimensions, and catch dim weight surcharges before they hit your invoice. Supply chain services · Ask James
