Why Business Days Matter
Contracts, invoices, payment terms, service-level agreements, and regulatory deadlines almost always measure time in business days, not calendar days. “Net 30” means 30 business days from the invoice date, not 30 calendar days. “Cleared funds within 3 business days” means weekends and federal holidays do not count. Getting this math wrong by even a day can delay payments, breach SLAs, or miss a regulatory filing window — so any system that schedules, bills, or reports needs an accurate business-day calculator baked into its date logic.
US Federal Holidays and Observance Rules
The United States recognizes 11 federal holidays, but the dates are not always intuitive. Fixed-date holidays like Independence Day (July 4) and Christmas (December 25) shift to the nearest weekday when they fall on a weekend — Saturday observances move to Friday, Sunday observances move to Monday. Floating holidays like Memorial Day (last Monday in May), Thanksgiving (fourth Thursday in November), and Martin Luther King Jr. Day (third Monday in January) move each year by definition. Juneteenth (June 19) became a federal holiday in 2021. This tool encodes all of these rules and applies them consistently whether you are counting days between two dates or projecting a due date forward from today.
Automating Payment Term Logic
If you are building invoicing, AP, collections, or contract-management systems, this date logic almost always ends up embedded in application code — where holiday tables drift out of sync with the IRS, new holidays are forgotten, and leap-year edge cases surface years later. I build date-aware integrations and reporting layers that centralize business-day calculations, sync holiday tables from authoritative sources, and handle the quirks that trip up naive implementations.
