What Is a Bill of Lading?
A bill of lading (BOL) is the foundational document for LTL and truckload freight shipments. It serves three purposes: a receipt for the goods from shipper to carrier, a contract for the transportation services, and — in the case of negotiable BOLs — a document of title. The straight (non-negotiable) BOL generated here is the most common form used in domestic freight.
Key Fields
Every BOL identifies the shipper and consignee, the carrier, handling units and package type, a description of the goods, NMFC freight class (use the NMFC Freight Class Estimator), weight, hazmat indicators, FOB point (who bears loss risk in transit), and payment terms. The PRO number is the carrier's tracking number, assigned at pickup.
